Study FAQs
What is STRIVE about?
- Our goal is to find environmental contaminants and changes in your DNA that increase risk of liver disease and liver cancer (like liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma). These diseases affect ethnic minorities. Information collected will be used to find ethnically-relevant tests to help doctors find liver disease and liver cancer early, and to reduce disparities in liver- related deaths. https://tinyurl.com/2p98m5z3 .
What is a research study?
- It is a scientific study that includes collecting information. The information will be used to learn about science, health, and the environment.
What is the goal of this study?
- If you choose to be part of this study, you will help researchers understand how our homes and the environment can impact our health in the long-term.
Why me?
- Studies such as these are typically limited to European ancestry participants. That means that the information gathered, like tests for early detection of diseases, tend to be relevant to these populations. That increases health disparities. We want to include everyone in our study, so that what we learn is useful for all populations.
What will I do during this study?
If you choose to join this study, you will be asked:
- For blood, saliva (spit), and urine (pee) samples
- For samples of dust, water, and soil from your house.
- Questions about your daily life
What are the costs of taking part in this study?
- It will not cost you anything to take part in this study. You will be paid $50 for each study visit (every 1-2 years).
What are the benefits of taking part in this study?
- This study will help us understand liver disease and liver cancer. This study will not benefit you personally, but it may help other people in the future.
- You will be paid $50 for each study visit (every 1-2 years).
